Lake Monona 20km
Lake Monona 20K and 5K run, taking place on Saturday, May 5th, 2012, offers a beautiful course with springtime temperatures often ideal for running, and lots of runners to share the experience. For those with longer distance ambitions, this "almost" half marathon is a great way to peak your training for the 20 mile Syttende Mai Run a week later, or to prepare for the Madison Marathon. Course:
The start and finish for both events will be near the Winnequah Park Pool House. Winnequah Park is in Monona WI. The start and finish is on Nichols Road.
The 20km course will take you around Lake Monona. A 20km loop, clockwise, on winding residential streets and paved bike paths close to the scenic shore of beautiful Lake Monona, with moderately rolling hills. The 5km mark comes shortly after you enter Waunona Way. A spectacular state capitol skyline beckons as you cross Lake Monona on the causeway towards the 10km mark. You descend into Olbrich park shortly after the 15km mark. A last descent and less than 1/4 mile to the finish. A course map is available here.
The 5km course will start the same way as the 20km course and follow the first mile of the 20km route. The 5km course will loop past Winnequah Park and join the last mile or so of the 20km course and continue to the finish. Click here for the 5K course map.
Aid Stations:
On the 20km run course, aid stations will be spaced nearly every 2.5 miles. On the 5km Run/Walk, there will be one aid station about half way. Aid stations will be stocked with water and Gatorade. A port-a-potty will be available shortly after 10km on the 20km run route.
Timing:
Timing will be done by Midwest's best Timing company: Sports Management and Associates. This year, we will be using disposable chips worn on the bib number. No chips to pick up or return and nothing to tie on your shoe.
Splits:
There are painted marks on, and signs to the side of, the course at every mile and every 5 km. We will have someone calling times at the 5 km, 10 km and 15 km markers. All finish times recorded until finish line closes 3 hours after the start. Digital clocks will be present at the finish and 10k mark. There will be a split point at the 5k and 10K marks on the 20km run course.
